“Excellent class. not too intimidating for a beginner. Makes me wanna know more.”
“This course was inspiring to say the least. Very well covered in all areas and easy to understand. Really glad that I took this course, it has been a huge help to my recent compositions :D”
In this course, Thomas Goss, teaches you everything you need to know to orchestrate for the largest section in any orchestra: the strings. He takes you on a 3+ hour, 38-tutorial journey that covers every aspect of writing and orchestrating for this powerful symphonic ensemble.
The first half of this course is dedicated to an in-depth guide to the string section. This is where you learn the concepts and mechanics that apply to all the strings as a whole. Thomas explains the articulations, bowing mechanics, section techniques with numerous examples from live symphony orchestras and videos of individual players demonstrating each technique in the orchestrator’s toolbox.
From there Thomas introduces each string section—the violins, violas, celli and double basses—and explains each group’s range, character and sonic role. This is where you get to know the different sections intimately, with their strengths (and limitations) and learn how they fuse to become “The Strings.”
Included in this course is Thomas’ custom PDF guide, “Studying String Orchestration” which you can download via the Resource file link on the course’s product page.
So join Thomas on this extraordinary symphonic journey and see how this course will inspire you to compose, arrange and orchestrate for strings! Read More...

Excellent class. not too intimidating for a beginner. Makes me wanna know more.
This course was inspiring to say the least. Very well covered in all areas and easy to understand. Really glad that I took this course, it has been a huge help to my recent compositions :D
A great series and I am eagerly awaiting new tutorials on this topic. My only complaint is that 102 Wind Orchestration was worded in a drier and more long-winded way. It also spent a *lot* of time talking about wind acoustics and not as much about score reading or functionality. I still can't wait to see any new tutorials on this topic!
An amazing in depth look at Orchestration utilizing the String Section with host, Thomas Goss. It provokes the viewer's cognitive and emotional framework, in order to develop the musician as well as to inspire them.
This was amazing, but when are you going to release the rest of this series? (Winds, Brass, Percussion, Keyboard) It would be a shame if you put the development of this series on hold.
I bought this course last night and slowly working my way through it. It is amazing and can't wait to get through it followed by all the next parts in the series. Well worth the money!
This course was very well outlined. It was set up very similar to my college orchestration class, but in a much clearer way. The use of multiple different recordings and professional musicians was an awesome supplement to this course. You even went above and beyond with the amazing resource files you created to help with continual study. I cannot thank you enough!
Excellent course!! It is very well put together, with plenty of examples to make it clear and interesting.
This is a must have tutorial for all that are serious about Orchestration. Methodical accurate teaching. Clear as can be and the additional material is feeding us with concrete tools to further expand our knowledge. Buying all tutorials by this guy. Mr. Goss you herby earned a chair in my virtual board of advisors. You an tell that Thomas actually has valuable experience in Orchestrating not just talking about it.... Thank you. Itzhak Yaron
This entry level class on string orchestration has been great for my current college arrangement course! The material is comprehensive. The videos have enough golden nuggets of information to keep you going throughout the tutorial. Looking forward to the next course!
this course is a must for understanding orchestra, and for those who love music. excellent, deep, and easy. and full of knowledge. thanks
Definitely One of the best courses on MacproVideo. Very informative and very well put together. And I'd love to see other courses in this serieis!!
Incredible course! Exquisite in detail. Probably one of the most valuable courses here. It will influence everything I do musically from here on. Please make the other courses in this series (102, 103, 104, 105) available ASAP.
Really a wonderful course...thank you.
A fantastic resource for anybody interested in learning about orchestration. In addition to its extremely high didactical value, which has been mentioned by many other reviewers, this course is very skillfully crafted. Pretty much the state of the art in multimedia learning material. Please, Thomas, make the other parts just as beautiful!
We are unbelievably lucky to have many talented people in the world willing and able to share a wealth of knowledge and this course is no exception. Brilliantly constructed, concise and above all instantly digestible. A must have for all interested in the subject of Orchestration. Bravo.
Really good course, but still gonna take me a while to digest all the information. would like to see the following ones asap.
Great Course!!! I´m really looking forward to the following ones.
One of the best tutorials on this site!
One word: Awesome!!!
Fantastic tutorial! Definitely one of the best tutorials I've ever bought from MPV. The instructor's carefully-planned integration of informative slides, video demos of string players, music notation, and overlay text is highly effective (thanks also for citing every piece played in the demos!). The extra effort put into creating this course really shows and is greatly appreciated. The value for the price is also amazing. If you're a composer or arranger who needs to write for strings, this course is an excellent place to start!
Excellent course. Signed up to MPV just for this when I read about it yesterday. I will be sure to watch it again, but I got so glued to the course that I ended up watching the entire course in two short breaks, over one single day. Cannot wait for the next part :)
This is sooooo great! I learned a lot more in this than in my college years! Thanks a lot, can't wait for more to come!
You should be very proud of what you've created here. So far I can't seem to get past the String Section There's so much to learn, especially from the list of scores to study. As we speak I'm in the middle of the Ravel Quartet, absolutely amazing writing. Once again, Thank you so much:)
One of the best courses I've watched. So many examples, so much in-depth knowledge from a clearly experienced composer. Really looking forward to the continuation of the series.
This is the most complete and easy to learn tutorial about the orchestration (String Section) I've ever reviewed or study. But! How many days should I wait to have the others? Haha... Seriously looking forward and check this section every day for next release (brass section). We all need it, guys :) So, just hurry ... Haha... Regards, ila
Educational, entertaining, lively … Not only did this course help me understand the ‘why’ of strings and their people, it made me even more anxious to try the ideas out. Thank you, Thomas!
There's a lot of technical information, which sometimes is quite boring if you don't play any string instrument, but I guess it makes the tutorial very complete. Can wait to watch the following tutorials of this course, since it will helped me a lot to write string sessions.
I can't wait for the next ones. This course was fun and held my interest throughout.
I always wanted to explore orchestration how strings work in in unity with woodwinds brass and percussion and the layout this course is just what I needed
Bravo...simply the best! Can't wait for more...
Phenomenal tutorial! Thomas really goes above and beyond here by not only providing a complete, comprehensive tutorial but by also providing a free PDF resource and website packed with additional information. An obvious labour of love and a serious start for anyone looking to get into orchestration. Thanks Thomas and Macprovideo. Truly great stuff!
Amazing, awesome! For me one of the best tutorials ever! Can't wait to watch the next lesson...An eye- and brainopener and so clearly explained, thank you so much!
Bravo! Comprehensive, enjoyable to watch and listen to, and easy to follow. Excellent resources for further study. A great tutorial. Well done.
great course, thanks.
This is the most complete tutorial on the subject I've seen ever! Fantastic job Thomas!
Thank you for this course. It was marvelous. Looking forward for more.
