The EVOC 20 PolySynth, can be intimidating when you first plug it in! However, once you dig beneath its perplexing, techno faceplate you’ll find an underground sonic universe waiting to be mined!
So what are Vocoders?
Let David Earl –our star MPV super-trainer– enlighten you! He starts this journey with a field trip into the history of Vocoding. You’ll learn why vocoders were invented, how they were initially deployed and the fantastic physics behind how they make inanimate objects sound like they’re singing!
But get this: Did you know that the EVOC is a full-blown standalone synth,? Well, it is and in the next section the amazing Mr. Earl explains its different synthesis engines and how to program them. You’ll learn all about the EVOC’s extensive library of built-in wave tables, its overtone rich FM synthesis engine, and the sweepable lowpass filter and filtered noise generator.
Now it’s time to Vocode! David explains the EVOC’s deep “center section” with all its programable formant bands, U/V detection (no sunglasses needed) and ultra cool modulators. This is where all the Vocoding magic happens and soon you, too, be mastering all the EVOC’s controls.
So join David Earl and learn how the EVOC 20 PolySynth can be instrumental in making synth tracks sing, creating robotic voices and just doing some really weird and crazy-cool sonic effects!

Great little course on Logic Pro's EVOC 20 Vocoder by David Earl. Dave provides an overview of all the EVOC's features and demonstrates how it can be used in several practical applications - definitely worth the watch for any Logic Pro users.
David Earl digs deep in this tutorial, starting with a history of Vocoding, explains every parameter and then starts to tweak. Great tutorial, thanks MPV/David.
very informative and presented with a great flow!
I've never tried player a vocoder before but recently my interest in EDM has risen & I figured I'd give this tutorial a shot. Definitely a great starting point for someone new to vocoding.
VERY INFORMATIVE. IF YOU LISTEN CLEARLY AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS YOU WILL ONLY NEED THIS TUTORIAL 1 TIME. DEFINITELY A MUST HAVE FOR ALL CREATIVE LOGIC USERS.
Normally for shorter tutorials, I would limit the rating to no more than 4 stars.. The last last few creative sections were so superb that I changed my mind! LogicNinja!! Good gig MacPro!!!
Good overview of the EVOC 20 - covers all the settings, how they affect the sound with live examples. Also discusses the routing from Logic using Buses.
Very informative tutorials... to the point and useful. Using the drums as a carrier is very creative way to use the EVOC !!
This very probably was the funnest video series I've seen on mPV! I can't say I have a lot of real life use for vocoding (although it inspired some recordings on a robot game)--it was was just a lot more fun to play with a "toy" when you know how it works.
This adds a different skill to you Logic work and is brilliantly taught. Using the EVOC is a great way to add a Vocoder or a synth to your work! Superbly taught!
Just wow! Dont let you fool by the title and the category. It is not just for Logic owners, and not even just for vocoding, it gives you a deep understanding of parameters of all virtual instruments like samplers, synthesizers! One of the most well understandable tutorials I have ever watched!
Hi Martin, I really enjoyed this tutorial. It helped me to understand all these wonderful functions of the EVOC. I would have loved to see more examples of application possibilities, but through this tutorial I´ve got enough knowledge now to experience on my own. best regards Amir
Superior tutorial. It helps a lot when the musical ideas presented as examples are sweet on the ear, and the way David conveys the musical potential of the EVOC-20 really hits home. I find Logic's own instruments very rewarding because they need to be explored in depth...in order to see that they are as good as third-party plug-ins.It depends on the individual.Cheers
A great tutorial! I´m not quite unfamiliar with vocoder plugins, but the run through of the synth section was an eye opener. From now on I will most certainly consider the EVOC an alternative to other softsynths. Only drawback is the sound of EVOC itself! It has nothing to do with the teacher or the tutorial. I find it pretty hard to find a satisfying sound, if you´re not going for a robot sound. I mainly use the Orange vocoder, but transfer value from this tutorial is high!
Dave earl or david as he doesn´t care - That Much ! - is a wonderful TEACHER.
