Finally, the tutorial we've all been waiting for - Logic's Mastering Toolbox!Watch as our Star Logic trainer, Steve H, demonstrates deep and fundamental concepts in the proper use of plugins to Master your tracks like a pro. But that's not all ...
This program starts with an overview of the history of mastering, and how the unique trade of the "Mastering Technician" grew as audio transitioned from wax cylinders, to the phonograph, tape, compact disc, and now digital files like MP3s.
With a solid understanding of the history, you will next move on to the present day and learn how to master great sounding music in Logic. Along the way, you'll explore all of the important mastering plugins in Logic, including compressors, limiters, and EQ. But this isn't just a simple "point-and-explain" tutorial ... Steve provides comprehensive detail not only on how to use these powerful Mastering DSP plugins, but also WHY you want to use them to achieve certain effects with your sound.
If you need to make BIG audio, this tutorial will show you the way. Drawing on over 30 years of experience as an audio engineer, and drawing on incredible input from his stable of industry friends (including Grammy award winning Mastering Technicians like Phil Magnotti), Steve H has provided macProVideo.com with his Magnum Opus tutorial on Mastering with Logic.
This tutorial is MANDATORY viewing for anyone creating music in Logic. Read More...

A brilliant series. I'm giving a 4-star and would like to repeat Rupak's comment from May 18th. Bouncing process in more detail would be very helpful. Specifically, the bouncing of mixed tracks in the arrange area to an audio file to be sent for Mastering in Logic. It is only implied in the course that this is done before the Mastering process and I'm still unclear on it. Is there a way to master the bounced track within the same Logic project that was used to mix? But it's still a brilliant course with all kinds of info that's usually hard to find and even harder to understand when you do. Thanks Steve H!

A great course! I finally understand how to approach a mastering session. Until this course I just did things like loading a plugin and hoping that the default settings would give me a good result because I had no idea of what I was doing. I watch this course many times until it started to make sense to me. I can recommend it to everyone who needs to know how to finalize his composition.

Steve H. is great. His explanations are easy to understand - even for a non-native speaker like me. I however appear not to have as sensitive ears as him - I could hear the differences sometimes when he applied a filter/effect.

I bought this CBT because I quickly needed a fast introduction to Mastering with Logic. Never having used a DAW before and not being a native speaker, I found this course very well structured and just right to learn the basics and get an idea where to start. What I liked best: - Topic list that allows the user to watch all lectures out of order if desired. Where I would like to learn more: - Use of the multipressor - Space Designer Over all rating: The course is worth every cent!

This is a very helpful series to get me started with some of the tools for mixing. The presentation is very clear and it was important to realize that this is an art and a technology, but your ears are what finally determines your selections and quantities. This highly recommended. The tutorials didn't overwhelm me, but encouraged me to try things out myself!!

It's a reasonably good overview of what mastering is about. The examples are pretty good. But unfortunately i still don't know how to use a multipressor adequately after watching this tutorial. I also strongly felt that the bouncing segment of this tutorial was not comprehensive enough. Things that should have been addressed include (a) How a track should be bounced from the arrange to a file that needs to be mastered (b) how a mastered file should be bounced to different formats for different purposes.

I am blown away by this course. i am currently using another daw to produce and master my music and although the material presented here is Logic based, the information can be applied to any mastering program. Thank you steve, you present the information in a very clear and concise manner. I recommend this course to everyone interested in knowing what mastering is and how they can do a great job at home even before getting it to a professional.

I have to recognize that, my first impression of the way Steve explain, was not the best. Certainly it has a very characteristic way of speaking. But damn, he makes everything so clear! I think, in fact, that he is one of the best teachers here in macprovideo. This tutorial is a good first step for those who want an aproach to the art of mastering 'in Logic´s box'.

One of the great things I like about Steve 's tutorial is he actually shows you what he uses in his mastering track! Many people can explain things well. I wanna know what he uses! I wanna know why and how he uses things. Now I know. As Dale Carnegie said, " If you want to be the best, find out what the best people are using...and copy them!" Thanks again for all your work, Steve. Eric

Killer! Worth its weight in gold. Doesn't tell you how to master an entire album, but there's enough info here to make that part of the process easy. By the time you finish this course, all you'll have to learn is how to match EQ from song to song (Logic has a plug in for this) and match levels (use your ears or logic's level meter.) Very solid, detailed and highly recommended.

I found myself in the position to finish my own composed music without any real additionally help. Composing classical music combined with electronic elements is truly very difficult to get mastered and usually one has to go into a Pro Studio to get this job done. This tutorial ist just excellent in the way Steve explains the basics of Mastering and what one has to take care of. It makes clear how important the mastering process is. I strongly recommend this tutorial to everybody who wants to produce his/her own professional CDs.

I had to buy this tutorial because it explains all of the basic things I never really got a chance to study. I feel like I'm not so in the dark now with some of the terminology. I actually applied some of the techniques to songs that I considered finished and was able to improve on them quite a bit. I'm not as afraid to open up a plug-in and try to improve the sound of an instrument or track.

Steve is one of my favorite tutors. The best: He really builds up your knowledge by - first showing you the problem, - then describing it so you actually know what the actual problem is - telling you what to do to solve the problem - and then showing you by example hands-on within the software what you can do. These really are top tutorials. And in this particular series you can learn how to master a track just with the built-in plugins Apple's Logic offers. It's the style of tutorial I came to expect from MacProVideo and the style of tutorial I constantly come checking back if there is something new to learn here.

A good, all-round attempt at explaining a process that many people find intimidating. The processes involved to bring out the best in a good mix are well-described. More could be said about the mastering environments - any mastering process will never manage to compensate for a poor monitoring environment, but this tutorial describes the basics of mastering in a thoughtful way.

Since I don't like to rate something as "best" when I don't have a basis for comparison, I entered a rating of "4". But I wouldn't argue with a "5". I found this tutorial very helpful, and right after watching it I was able to greatly improve the mixes I've been working on. Logic's Mastering Toolbox was informative on several levels, from the overall recording process, to understanding the set-up for mastering, to helping to understand the function and use of individual plug-ins, to seeing in the course of the video ways to streamline my use of Logic itself. I've been working ("groping" might be a better word) with Logic for home recording a little over two years now, so I was ready to absorb much of the tutorial material quickly. This tutorial has certainly convinced me to try more of the kind. My main criticism is the cost. Some of this content should be included with the software (I'm still using Logic 7, by the way).

Great, great great,my mind is still spinning but I'll nail it down. Only criticism would be I'd love to be taken through the 'tidy' up process, the stuff you do off screen, the tweeking if you like, I know it's down to the golden ears but it'd be cool to know more what those ears see(hear) or don't see(hear)!I'm just a humble muso realising you've got to understand at least the basics in this world and I rely on my ears a lot, but don't always know how to get the sound that's in my head into a finished product, the notes I can do, it's the production, all the tutorials so far have been awesome just need to find more time, any babysitters out there!!!

As a recent convert to the DAW world, my approach as a composer and arranger has mostly been to present projects before they are adequately produced. Good music should be enough, right? But this is the real world. All well and good until you start adding a lot of instruments. I needed to get up to speed quickly with mixing and mastering, and Steve H's no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase method for the fine art of mixing did just that. I was surprised by the emphasis on compressors over EQ, with EQ applied more for repairing than enhancing audio. Vital tools such as the MultiPressor and AdLimiter are featured in depth, along with tips and tricks about things like adding subtle reverb to one instrument in an already flattened audio track. Great analogies of the theories behind these tools' function help drive key points and make them memorable, making these courses particularly effective. Much appreciation to Steve and MPV for a course that has helped me get to work quickly, and retain new-found knowledge about Logic's mastering magic.

A very inspiring and helpful tutorial. As a teacher, engineer and musician I´m familiar with most of the issues. But things are so brilliantly explained here, that I become a better teacher: F.ex explaining sample and bit rate, compressor attack settings and much more....... Really really good stuff! Very detailed explanation to the basic idea what mastering does and how it works. With the help of this tutorial you get the very same results at mastering your tracks like some professional audio engineers who are specialised at it over years!!! I missed only the following part, if you have some frequency bands missing or very quiet in your spectrum, how to fix it so that you have it sounds rounder and warmer. I can advise this tutorial to everyone who wants to produce big phatt sound on his own, without paying an extra master engineer for doing that. (Experience based on Techno/Minimal/Electro Music)

VERY informative and enlightening! I never really understood how the compressor/limiter worked. Understanding of these two tools is absolutely essential for mastering. As usual, Steve H is an excellent teacher. Great examples; clear instructions; and depth of knowledge. No surprise, then, that I found Logic 401 to be another sound investment from macProVideo. As I was watching the tuts, I kept dipping into my latest project (which I had open simultaneously in Logic) to apply what Steve H was saying. Awesome video's all i have purchased are great,i can go on and on,just fab. However guys this is where i'm at with logic. Martin i have one of your logic books and have viewed endless hours of tutorials online and just cant what i personally really need! What i have found is great on how to use logic, with 10 years paid dj work and my complete lack of musical skill i still cant make a proper structured house track(like Joey Youngman). The sort of video's i would purchase from mpv would be how to a complete track in detail, not how to use logic persay then summarising where to use previous guidance from tutorials with mastering etc. To be honest im 42 and one thing i wish to do in life as begin my dj retirement is just make a bloody record even if its crap!! At least things are in the right place and production is tight, the rest will come in time. Please consider if you can. I would love to sit over Youngmans shoulder in the studio or perhaps Olav would be interested? Perhaps others users of your tute's would like commercial electro producer ie Chris Lake(check out his vidz on his track making) or trance or RnB. Them my thoughts Scottie PS i hate thiefs and hope you are recovering well, things can only improve for you guys. Best of Luck I reckon you would sell shitloads of vidz

it's a good tutorial perhaps a bit too long in the historical part. It could be a good thing that you keep in mind logic is a huge software needing a precise approach of any feature. For exemple the part of mastering a complete acoustic set without virtual instruments, the way to go from a multitrack arrange to the final stereo or surround bounce is too short (using a multi mic take with phases problemes). How can we use the pre and post listening functions, are there fixed rules for an order of the treatment plugs ? A few words upon space design and his own software, taking and usind an IR…? thanks 4 the voice, slow and cool. It's comfortable 4 a french musician. Thanks for reading! jc omeyer music teacher, composer

I'm totally impressed by the professional quality of teachings I find on your Logic tutorials, amazing! The same with Ableton & GarageBand. The approach is thourough & exhaustive to the point that I didn't find better elsewhere. The learning curve of Tips & Tricks saves one from trying to reinvente the wheel, specially when one's time & energy is devoted to art as a priority. Five stars from me.

this is quite a complicated subject but is well illustrated with graphics and aural examples. sometimes though i wish he would give us a little more time to compare before and after the effect before speaking again as changes to the sound can be quite subtle and to the untrained ear it is not always obvious.

This tutorial is a goldmine. The best thing about it is the way that Steve H demystifies the various elements of mastering and makes them easy to understand and apply, without dumbing-down. Highly recommended.

I've just gotten through my first look at the Mastering Overview. It has cleared up several concepts and words I did not have a handle on. Very good examples of how things work, conceptually. I will really use this along side finalizing the work I'm doing in Logic. The concepts will be valuable when using Pro Tools, too.

Excellent and very helpful video. As an "extreme hobbyist", I have played around with digital recording for years, but was wasting much time doing things the wrong way! This video only took a few hours to watch but packed a great deal of helpful information into that short time. A must have item for anyone who wants to start to utilize Logic's potential.

This tutorial excels and is up to the usual high standards now well established with MacProVideo. Steve Horelick is a master of his subject and delivers his tutorials in such an easy to understand manner that iron out what are very complex concepts. The graphic content within this tutorial are most impressive and highly informative. His relaxed manner is coupled with an infectious enthusiasm. Indeed, I had little or no understanding of mastering before purchasing this tutorial. Frankly, it has been a revelation. So much so that I am now in the process of "re-mastering" all my tracks and my initial efforts are far superior to the originals with a lot more hard work still to do. Thank you Steve.

I own every logic training video from macPro and I was concerned that I wouldn't learn much from 401. I was wrong, Steve H did a great job of diving deep into the "how" it's done from the emotional progression of a song to the tools used to polish a mix. As always, macPro delivers value.

If I can learn one or two good tips from a tutorial, it is worth my time and money. If I learn more than that, the tutorial is well worth my time and money. This tutorial was well, well worth it! Great job, guys, as usual! Please, please keep the training coming!

Very good instructional overall. That tune got stuck in my head as well. Couple of points though. When A/Bing audio concepts I would leverage the onscreen info more and not chat as much. A/B more than once as well so we can really hear the difference. Other than that I feel it was worth the money and picked up some very useful information. Thanks Steve

EXCELLENT!! Much needed and long overdue treatment of the esoteric subject of mastering. The videos provided a GREAT snapshot of the history of mastering as well as making the topic of bit rates, headroom, etc very easy to understand. A great start for anyone to really understand the art of mastering, as opposed to just slamming a plug-in preset on the mix to make it loud and overcompressed and calling it done! Primo work guys at MacPro!!!!

Martin, I've purchased many of your training videos, including for Logic, Motion, and Final Cut, and I have to say, I love 'em all. I have to say, I truly appreciate the way your new NED browser works...it's a joy and easy to use. In addition to more advanced Logic Pro tutorials, I'd love to see you produce a few titles on Luxology's Modo...an incredible 3D content tool. Cheers, Bob.

This is the best mastering tutorial I have ever come across. I would recommend it to non-logic users, as well. I really appreciated the advanced topics such as the demonstration and explanation of how Logic's linear phase eq is different from the channel eq. Although you never really explained when it would be appropriate to use the linear phase eq over the channel EQ. I felt you could have spent more time on the multiband EQ. I still feel like I'm at the "trial and error" phase of using the multiband EQ. I mean, I know what all the parameters do, I just don't have the aesthetic sense of when to use them, yet. More examples on different types of source material would have been useful. I suppose you could devote a whole material just to that one plugin. Along those lines, this tutorial, like every mastering tutorial is very rock/pop-centric. I would love to see acoustic music covered in more detail, especially orchestral. I feel like what's missing in the marketplace is an intermediate/advanced mastering tutorial. Maybe it's something that can only be learned through experience.

Excellent and thank you very much I learnt a lot. However, I would pay twice as much money for a producer masterclass on any form of electronic music. eg. how to make a trance/progressive house song from start to finish.

Dear MPV sincerely I didn't have the time yet to go through the new tutorial. I could only watch the first three lessons and ... well I can say that they are REALLY good. I'm studing also elettroacoustic music on very specific and scientific huge books (to use with Max/Msp) but nobody still explained to me the Bit Depth wiich such a clarity and wonderfull metaphoric evidence. So...welcome to this new tuorial, Steve, and thank you all for your really precious work. BTW, I didn't have the time because I've decided to start again from zero going back to the old dear Logic 101. How much I couldn't understand the first time I studied! Everithing so usefull. Roberto

Steve H did a great job of condensing such a tremendous amount of info on a subject so deep into very palatable clips. He makes technical info that could be overwhelming easy to absorb, while still conveying the essence of the subject. His pacing is really good, and his style entertaining. The video itself is really well produced and the use of highlighting, notes, icons, transitions, etc adds to the overall experience. Each segment gives you the, "I can't wait to watch the next one" feeling, although it's hard to decide whether to watch the next one or go and apply what you've just learned to your music because it's so exciting! Congratulations Steve and Martin! Another great video tutorial from MacProVideo!!

As a musician by heart, I wanted to share my views of this Logic's Mastering Toolbox by Mr. Steve Horelick. Up Till now I have note seen in a dvd formate a better list of tools put together by "a Master", with great integrity and passion especially putting forth, a energy that en-spires and encourages the sound engineer, the student, the novice, and of course the serious musician. Great experience conveyed within a careful plan that translates into Brilliance! Thank for Must Know Mastering! I especially will keep these methods and techniques close to be every day working in Logic.

Put simply, what an amazing tutorial and presented extreamly well by Steve H! I've never really thought about all that was involved in the mastering process before but this tutorial is a real eye opener for me and I think that anyone working with audio would benefit from viewing this, whether you have been in the game for years or hours! I have to say I was looking forward to this release but I have found it disappointing. Potential problems are shown but are not rectified before the tutorial moves on. There is far too much rambling but whereas what i really want to know is how to improve my mastering skills in Logic. A track is being edited, but when it comes to a final mix for instance one has a multitude of audio tracks in the timeline, so, one wonders, even for a preliminary example, why use the one track scenario when it is an irrelevance - anyone who has been through this tutorial will I think know what I mean. I felt as though this was rushed out rather having the usual amount of care and consideration that goes into a macprovideo. It's disappointing.

I like a lot the presentation of the mastering overview of more than half an hour, it's a very good idea. I hope to find it also in future tutorials. When Steve H talks...I listen, and with good reason. macProVideo tutorials always come jammed full of detailed explanations and more importantly reasons why we might want to apply certain technics. Before watching this my approach to mastering was very much trial and error, but now I have a much firmer grasp of the concepts behind mastering and a vastly improved understanding of how to apply compression and EQ to a mix. 1st rate!

Hi. I'm honestly not often compelled to write a review but I had to make an exception for this tutorial. Mastering has always been one of the most difficult stages of finishing for me. This tutorial shows in amazing detail every aspect of the mastering process, including some very informative historical tidbits on audio. I would highly recommend it to anyone mixing or mastering in any of today's DAWS, specially if you're working in Logic 8.

In the immortal words of Britney Spears, "Oops, He's Done It Again!" Yet another cracking tutorial from Mr. Steve H. Four years ago, when we first started using Logic, Mastering always seemed to be a closely guarded secret between the chosen few and a couple of Druids. Steve breaks it all down, unravels many of the mysteries and seeming complexities in his usual witty, informative and laid back style. Our debt to you Steve continues to widen. Can't thank you enough... Now, where are those cotton buds?
